is an abridged text from the chapter of the same name in Dr. Archibald T. Davison's 1946 publication of "The Technique of Choral Composition." This chapter lays a foundation of what the world of vocal music was up to the publication date, and then, through the manipulation of a single text and the progression of a spoken language to a sung language,

attempts to add anything to that world. We grow as musicians and listeners through our open willingness to learn and our continued hope for all to proceed from the simple to the complex.
